George Williams Dudley, 92, of Columbus, GA, died Saturday, December 6, 2014 at his residence.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Reverend Robert Beckum and Reverend Helen Berenthien officiating. A private interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, December 8, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
George Williams Dudley was born August 31, 1922 in Seale, AL, son of the late Albert Homer Dudley and Mattie Williams Dudley. He lived in Seale, AL and moved to Columbus, GA to play football at Columbus High School. Having a strong desire to serve his country when the war began, he enlisted in the United States Army. Serving proudly during World War II, he led his platoon through many fights during the Battle of the Bulge in Germany. He was in Company A 394th Infantry 99th Division.
After the war, he worked on oil rigs in Louisiana and Texas. He met and married Wilda Richards from Combs, Texas. They were happily married for 64 years.
Returning to Columbus, he worked on the Family Lumber company in Seale, AL and the Dudley Lumber and Axe Mill in Union Springs, AL. Later, he built houses in Columbus and bought and sold real estate. During this time, he also began working on the Family Farm raising cattle, crops, and timber.
George attended St. Luke United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fellowship Class. He supported the Valley Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army along with the Boy Scouts of America. For many years, he was a member of the Lions Club and helped sell brooms to raise money for their many charities. He served as president of the Muscogee County Farm Bureau Insurance Company in which his leadership led the growth of the Columbus Office.
The Family Farm in Seale was his passion where he loved to hunt, fish, garden and enjoy the fellowship of his family and friends.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons, Brad Richards Dudley and George Williams Dudley, Jr.; his brother, Albert Homer Dudley, Jr. (Bubba) and sister, Dorothy Banks Dudley (Dot).
To cherish his memory he is survived by his loving wife, Wilda Richards Dudley; two daughters, Anne Dudley Lee (Steve) of Birmingham, AL and Nancy Dudley Gordy (George) of Columbus, GA; three grandchildren, Cheryl Lee and Stuart Lee of Birmingham, AL, Chris Gordy (Rachel) of Columbus, GA; two great-granddaughters, Sarah Lee of Birmingham, AL and Bailey Claire Gordy of Columbus, GA; his nephew, Albert Homer Dudley "Bud"; his loving caretakers, Elaine Jordan and Nadena Billingslea; along with many cherished friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke Respite Care Center, Valley Rescue Mission of Columbus, GA, or The Salvation Army.
