George H. Cussel, 78, of Columbus, GA died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Gene Cook officiating. A private interment with full military honors will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday afternoon from 12 to 1 p.m. at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mr. Cussel was born March 29, 1932 in Hannover, Germany son of the late John and Maragarete Pincus Cussel. After surviving Nazi Germany, George emigrated to the US in May 1940. He enlisted in the USAF, retiring after 20 years of service. During his military service, he obtained his Physician's Assistant License. George settled in Columbus where he started the Departments of Respiratory Care, both at The Medical Center and Phenix City Hospital. He also started Respiratory Care Associates. He retired as assistant Vice President for Professional Services at the Medical Center, establishing the Cardiac Catherization Labs.

He was instrumental in the start of the high risk nursery. George was a founding member of Columbus Hospice Inc. where he served as Executive Director for three years and remained a board member until his death. After hospice, he became Vice President at St. Francis Hospital where he was responsible for cardiac services, renovating the catherization lab. In later years, he worked as a Physicians Assistant to Dr. Marvyn Cohen and Dr. George Shannon.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilma, his half sister, Hanna and two grandsons.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia K. Cussel of Columbus, GA, three daughters, Margaret Elaine Miklos (Gale) of Atlanta, GA, Deborah Ann Titus (Robert) of Albany, GA and Hannah Lynn Ahearn (Bobby) of Marietta, GA, stepson, Kris Dodds (Leslie Leverett) of Columbus, GA, and stepdaughter, Kim Dodds Massey (Jeff) of Phenix City, AL. Twelve grandchildren, two step grandchildren as well as five great grandchildren also survive Mr. Cussel.
