Frances Elizabeth Wright, a beloved educator, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on September 13, 2023, at her home in Columbus, Georgia. Born in Columbus on January 31, 1939, she was a lifelong resident of the city she loved.
A Celebration of her life will be held 2:00 PM Monday, September 18, 2023 at Evangel Church with Pastors Paul Thomas and Bud Rupel officiating. A private interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Frances was a proud graduate of Jordan High School, class of 1957. Her love for children and education led her to pursue a master's degree in Early Childhood Education from Columbus College, which she obtained in 1977. Further strengthening her commitment to education, she earned her 6-year certificate in early childhood education from the same institution.
Frances's passion for teaching was evident in her career at Matthews Elementary School, where she taught kindergarten for many years. She was known for her dedication, patience, and ability to inspire her students. Outside of the classroom, Frances was an active member of the Midland Queen of the "Red Hat Society" for three decades, where she formed many enduring friendships.
Frances's dedication to her community extended to her faith life. She was a member of Evangel Church for over 55 years, where she not only attended services but also was an active participant in the church choir and the Joint Heirs Sunday School Class. Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life, providing her comfort, strength, and a deep sense of purpose.
Beyond her professional and community activities, Frances had a range of personal interests. She was an accomplished pianist, often sharing her musical talents with her family and church community. Frances also enjoyed puzzles, a hobby that reflected her patience and attention to detail. A lover of travel, she particularly cherished her trips to the beach, where she found relaxation and inspiration. Her pets were also a significant part of her life, providing her with companionship and joy.
Frances is survived by her loving husband, Gene Lewis. Her legacy will continue to be cherished by her children, Allen Ted Wright, Jr. (Melissa), Kellie Leigh Wright, Anita L. Parsons (Greg), April Davis (Thomas), Ronald Lewis, and her sister, Dorothy Ann Foran. Frances was a proud grandmother to Taylor Elizabeth Wright and her fiancé Bryant Matthews, John Robert Ingenito and his fiancé Abby Bland, Kasie Bechdoldt (Jacob), Darrel Tharpe, Greg Parsons, Jr. (Karlee), Rebecca Smith, Garrett Frith, Travis Davis, Roni Lewis, Ronald Lewis, Jr., Donald Lewis and Daniel Lewis. Frances also leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren, who will remember her fondly.
Frances Elizabeth Wright was a woman of deep faith, boundless love, and commitment to her family and community. Her legacy as an educator, community member, and family matriarch will live on in the many lives she touched. As we remember Frances, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of purpose, generosity, and lasting impact.
