Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, February 24, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA with Rev. David Howle officiating. An interment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4:00-6:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mrs. Powers was born February 8, 1933 to the late Arba Heacock and Doris MacDonald Heacock. Born in Powassan, Ontario, Canada, Fay moved to Columbus in 1960 with her husband, Ted Powers. Over the years she developed a reputation as a master craft-maker and in the late 1960s and early 70'-s could be found doing puppet shows on WTVM one day and selling handcrafted dolls or holiday confections the next.
Throughout the 1970'-s she spent much of her time volunteering at Waddell Elementary, serving in roles from president of the PTA to teacher's aide, assistant librarian and director of plays and music. During this time she also worked for the former Tiffany's Bakery in Peachtree Mall as their cake chef, producing hundreds of birthday and wedding cakes for the bakery, as well as the Columbus area, over the years.
She was a devoted Christian and during the 1980'-s and 90'-s gave much of her time to her church and church family. She was a long time member of Edgewood Baptist Church and did volunteer work there as well, including setting up the first church library. During this time she also produced a wide assortment of calligraphy and paintings that still don the walls of the church to this day. In later years she was a member of Striplin Terrace UMC and spent much of her time taking care of her husband Ted.
She was an accomplished artist, sculptor, and designer and never declined an invitation to help with a civic or private function. Her spirit of giving was without limits and her devotion to Christ was unshakeable. Her dedication to her family was paramount and her children were often in awe of her ability to have so many ventures going at the same time and yet still be a wife and a mother to three children simultaneously.
Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Powers.
Survivors include her daughter, Kelly Fitzpatrick (Kevin) of Sterling, VA; sons, Clay Powers (Karla) of Cataula, GA, and Kevin Powers (Kim) of Box Springs, GA; sister, Dianne Maki (Gordon), Hamilton, Ontario; brothers, Wayne Heacock (Beverly), and Gary Heacock both of Hamilton, Ontario; and grandchildren, Rebekah Powers, Richard Powers, Michael Powers, Olivia Powers, Emily Powers, Ivey Powers, Gabriel Powers, Ella Powers, Levi Powers, and Adalia Powers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Crisis Pregnancy Center, www.soundchoicespc.org.
