Evelyn Smith Shumate

Evelyn Smith Shumate was born on August 31, 1931, in Marion, Alabama, the daughter of Loyd Clifton Smith and Sadie Tucker Smith.  She died in Gray, Georgia, on March 15, 2022.  Mrs. Shumate was a graduate of Perry County High School and Judson College in Marion, Alabama; and Columbus College, now Columbus State University, in Columbus, Georgia.  She was a life-long teacher and shared her passion for English language and literature with generations of students, including in Columbus, where she taught at Daniel Middle School and Columbus High School.  She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Shumate Schwartz and Robert Alan Schwartz, and her granddaughter, Caitlin Beatrice Schwartz, all of Gray, Georgia; by her brother-in-law, Marvin Franklin (Sarah) Bullock, of Reidsville, North Carolina; and by five nephews and one niece:  Benny Lee (Diane) Goodman and Mark Wesley Bullock of Reidsville, North Carolina; Samuel Edward (Richard) Bullock of Chicago, Illinois; Richard Ashton (Annette) Johnson of Eufaula, Alabama; David Loyd (Jennifer) Johnson of Lugo, Alabama; and Evelyn Kay (Mark) Whaley of Eufaula, Alabama. Her husband, Claude Allen Shumate, Jr., died on April 23, 2004, and her son, Claude Allen Shumate, III, died on December 26, 1991.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, March 19, in Parkhill Cemetery, The Reverend John Fugh, Jr., Associate Pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, presiding, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Boulevard, Columbus. The family will receive friends from 10:30 A.M. to 12 noon at the funeral home. Friends preferring to send a memorial gift instead of flowers may contribute to the Claude A.
