Emmett Leroy Storey, 98, of Columbus, GA died Friday, January 8, 2016 at the Gardens at Calvary.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 17, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Chaplain Vern Jordin officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Emmett Leroy Storey was born September 13, 1917 in Columbus, GA to the late William Howell Storey and Minnie Marie Martin. He dropped out of Columbus Industrial High School from 1936-39 to work at Martin Theatre and then the finishing plant at the Eagle & Phenix Mill to support family. He went back to school after Mr. T. C. Kendrick, principal of Columbus High School allowed him to enroll. He was able to get out early from school to work 2nd shift in the mill. He took a competitive comprehensive test and received a 2 year scholarship for pre-med at University of Ga. During WWII he enlisted in the Navy and became a Radioman 1st Class. In 1946 he went to Japan to work in the US Army GHQ Anti-Trust - Cartels Division, MacArthur's Tokyo Headquarters for a year. In 1952 he was stationed at Mould Bay, Prince Patrick Island, Canada as Senior American Executive Officer at a newly built Joint Canadian-US Weather Station 200 miles above the Arctic Circle. He worked for civil service from 1953-1973 at Ft. Benning retiring as a Management Analyst (Manpower). He served one year in Vietnam. His love for flying led him to charter the local Chapter 677 EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and he was involved for many years. His big hobby was statistics. He lived and enjoyed his last nine years at The Gardens at Calvary, a wonderful and loving facility.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Virginia Trawick Dudley and his son, Fredrick "Rick" Raiford Storey.

He is survived by son, William Dudley Storey (Linn), daughter, Anne Louise Erickson grandchildren, Joel Erickson, Matthew Erickson, Raiford Storey (Liz), Damon Talley (Julia) and Holly Halstead Haas (Joey), and great grandchildren, Ellis Talley, Ava Halstead and Keira Storey. Special thanks to Lisa Dodgen for all the love and care she gave to Emmett.
