Betty Zimmerman, 75, of Phenix City, AL died Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at her home.
Funeral services will be held 12 Noon Friday, February 11, 2011 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Sharon Smith officiating. A private graveside service for her family will be held at Lakeview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11 to 12 p.m. prior to the funeral service according to the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Ms. Zimmerman was born December 29, 1935 in Albany, NY daughter of the late Walter M. Redden and Edna Paul Redden. She traveled the world with her father and first husband both of who served in the U.S. Army. Betty continued the military tradition of her father by working for the Army for 26 years at Ft. Jackson, SC and Ft. Benning, GA. She retired in 1993 as a senior editor at the Infantry School's Publication's Division and in the early years of her career had served as senior of the Bayonet Newspaper.
Her education included schools in New York, Alabama, Korea, and New Jersey. She attended Alabama State College for Women in Montevallo, AL and completed the Department of Defense School of Journalism in Indianapolis, IN.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Virginia B. Redden and brother, Thomas W. Redden.
Betty is survived by her lifelong partner of 37 years, Linda Laine of Phenix City, AL, five sons that she was extremely proud of, Tony and Stephanie Zimmerman of Smith Station, AL, Blane and Patricia Mooney of Marietta, GA, Paul Mooney of Crawford, AL, Wade and Jin Mooney of Phenix City, AL and Ronald and Deidre Mooney of Phenix City, AL, a brother, Paul Redden of Markham, VA, three sisters, Ruth Rushby of Saunderstown, RI, Sally Redden of Phenix City, AL and Jane and Galen Whisenant of Decatur, AL, eight beloved grandchildren, Sydney and Zoie Zimmerman, Melissa and Christopher Mooney, Amanda Mooney, Megan and Anthony Mooney, and Dusty Mooney, all of whom she was so very proud of.
