Mrs. Elizabeth A. Cook, 89 was born on November 2, 1920 in Washington, DC the daughter of Frederick J. & Catherine V. Seidenberg.
Mrs. Cook died at Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, GA on Wednesday, November 04, 2009 while in the loving arms of her family.
Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband Levy H. Cook, granddaughter Suzanne Elizabeth Adams, brothers Robert J. Seidenberg and William J. Seidenberg.
The family will receive friends at McMullen Funeral Home on Sunday, November 8, 2009 from 4 till 6 pm. Services will be held on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 2 PM in her much loved Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a charter member, with Rev. Wayne Anthony officiating. Interment will follow at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery.
Mrs. Cook is survived by daughters Ruth A. Cook of Columbus, GA; Marie E. Cook of Kathleen, GA; son Walter J. Cook (Wanda) of Columbus, GA. Granddaughters Dawn Dixon (Greg) of Guyton, GA; Ashley Peterson (Preston) of Fairfield, CA; Jennifer Horton (Marc) of Columbus, GA; Kristi Stokes (Scott) of Pine Mountain Valley, GA and Lisa Marie Smith. Mrs. Cook has eight great grandchildren Jessica Rewis (Corey), Austin Dixon, Taylor, Cody and Makayla Peterson; Harper Horton, Garrett and Annslee Stokes. Mrs. Cook has one great great grandchild Tyler Rewis, sister Catherine J. Mullins of Baltimore, MD and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cook was committed to community service as she taught the nursery at Asbury United Methodist Church for 42 years. She was a Cub Scout leader and later a Girl Scout leader being in charge of the Cookie distribution for South Columbus for many years. Mrs. Cook was an active Red Cross volunteer until just recently for the Bloodmobile drives. She worked tirelessly for many years on the coffee and donut call at Martin Army Hospital for the patients.
Mrs. Cook was chosen Methodist Woman of the Year for Columbus while belonging to the Methodist Womens Fellowship. Mrs. Cook was awarded the Philip J. Batastini award for outstanding services to seniors.
Mrs. Cook was the first recipient of the House of Heroes program in the nation. Senator Max Cleland presented her with a flag that flew over the nations capitol. Other House of Representatives, Mayor Bobby Peters, and military dignitaries were also in attendance.
