Eleanor Ruth Hoyle Belflower departed this life on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at the Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, GA. Ms. Belflower was a resident of River Place retirement community for the past two years. She was born to Walter Howard Hoyle and Myrtle Pearce Hoyle on September 7, 1931 in Henderson, NC. She was married to William Talmadge Belflower for 19 years. They divorced in 1970. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Clifton Hoyle and Russell Hoyle, a set of unnamed twin sisters, her ex-husband, and an unnamed baby son.
After graduation from Vance County Senior High with the Class on 1949, she lived on her own in Henderson, NC in a boarding house for single women. After her marriage, she lived in Atlanta, GA, Colorado Springs, CO, Cochran, GA, Empire, GA, and Albany, GA. After her divorce, she lived in Empire, GA, Eastman, GA, and Henderson, NC. She returned to Eastman, GA, then in her later life moved to Waverly Hall, GA to live with her daughter.
She worked as a tobacco laborer in the fields and barns during her adolescence with her family in NC. After graduation, she worked for Carolina Bell as a telephone operator. After her marriage, she worked for the Credit Bureau of Atlanta, GA and the Credit Bureau of Colorado Springs, CO. She was a homemaker for around 15 years while raising her children. After her divorce, she worked as a seamstress at Roydon Wear in McRae, GA and at a hosiery factory in Henderson, NC. She trained as a caregiver for the aged while in Henderson. She cared for elderly clients in Henderson, NC, Eastman, GA, and Empire, GA. After her move to Waverly Hall, she worked as a Green Thumb employee at the Talbot County Senior Center. After her retirement, she became a member there and attended regularly. She was a volunteer caregiver for Vista Care Hospice for many years. She received Volunteer of the Year award in 2005 and the Community Member Award in 2006. She loved to read and would read to her elderly clients. She also loved her family and would travel to NC yearly for her family reunions. She was always a part of family events with her immediate family.
She is survived by one brother, David Daniel Hoyle of Henderson, NC; her daughter, Denise (Tim) Davidson of Waverly Hall, GA; two sons, David (Rachel) Belflower of Soldiers Grove, WI and Andrew (Dori) Belflower of Elko, GA; six grandchildren, Shauna (Zachariah) Gibson of Englewood, CO, Sharise Michelle (Keith) Brackett of Gordon, GA, Kristian (John) Daugherty of Elko, GA, Josh (Brandi) Hayes of Perry, GA, Morgan Belflower of the Atlanta, GA area, and Kanah Belflower of Elko, GA; and, four great-grandchildren, John Alan, Lucas, and Zachary Daugherty of Elko, GA, and Kelton Brackett of Gordon, GA.
Visitation will be held at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907 on Wednesday, December 14th from 5 - 7 p.m. Viewing will be held at Empire Pentecostal Holiness Church, 101 Church Street, Empire, GA on Thursday, December 15th from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. with services to follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Bowers Cemetery in Empire, GA.
McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made in her name to Vista Care Hospice now known as Gentiva Hospice of Columbus, GA 100 Brookstone Centre Parkway Columbus, GA 31904.
