Eleanor Ledtke Hall, 84, of Cataula, Ga., passed away at her home early in the morning of Friday, Dec. 26, after spending Christmas Day surrounded by her family.
Funeral services with military honors will be held at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. in Columbus, Ga., at 1 p.m. on Sunday, with visitation immediately following. The Rev. Bud Passmore will officiate.
Mrs. Hall was born in Rochester, N.Y., to Alice Schafer Ledtke and Albert Ledtke. She was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Women's Army Corps at Fort Jackson, S.C. It was there that she met soldier James O. Hall, whom she was married to for 57 years before his death in 2009. She raised four children and traveled across the country and to Germany before SFC Hall retired.
After being diagnosed with arthritis and adopting a strict walking and exercise regimen, at the age of 62, Mrs. Hall mentioned that she had always dreamed of hiking the Appalachian Trail. She and several family members spent the next few years hiking portions of the trail, completing the 79-mile section in Georgia.
She was a creative and can-do woman, whether nurturing plants in her greenhouse, sawing wood for a new project, sewing clothes, knitting and crocheting, preparing special family recipes or cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner for more than 40 family members. She was adored by her children and grandchildren and has missed her husband every day during the past five years.
Mrs. Hall is survived by her children and their spouses: Terry Hall Woodham and Donald Doster of Braselton, Ga.; Richard and Suzy Ruth of Salem, Ala.; Jerry and Beth Walker of Box Springs, Ga.; and James and Cheree Hall of Cataula, Ga; "adopted" daughter and husband Barbara and Danny Sanders of Hamilton, Ga.; one brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Betty Ledtke of Rochester, N.Y.; two sisters, Doris Dembowski of Amherst, N.Y. and Audrey Verhey of Rochester, N.Y.; and two sisters-in-law Janice Ledtke of Webster, N.Y. and Sadie Ruth Coleman of Brandon, Fla. She is also survived by grandchildren Mark, Malissa, Haley, Mikey, Dana, Erin, Patrick, Lindsay, Trey, Brandi, Brendon, Brian, Tiffany, Corey, Chelsey, Matt, Candace, Jessica, Jamie Mae, Buddy, Chance and Jason; and great-grandchildren Ariel, Harley, Adrianna, Justin, Cole, Bryce, Brenlee, Riley, Zoey, Shelby, Laney, Mason, Novalee, Delilah, Braxton, Brystal, Grayson, Ellie and Lily and Hayden.
The family would also like to thank Dr. Harshvadan Joshi and his staff for their support and kindness during the past 15 years. We know Mrs. Ellie is now with her beloved husband Jimmy forever.
The family requests donations be made in her memory to House of Heroes at www.houseofheroes.org or Columbus Hospice at www.columbushospice.com.
