Eiko Hatanaka Manning, 76, of Fortson, GA passed away Friday, February 14, 2014 at Columbus Hospice House surrounded by her family.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 11:00 am at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery with Chaplain Allison Owen officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 18, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.
Mrs. Manning was born July 18, 1937 in Hokkaido, Japan, daughter of the late Yoshitaro and Iyo Hatanaka. While in Japan, she met her American soldier, the "love of her life", Joe Manning, and they were later married in 1956. Her husband's career had the family stationed in Hawaii, Panama Canal, Brazil and back to the States. After living abroad for several years, her husband was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA where he retired and made Columbus, GA their home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Manning, her parents, 5 brothers and 1 sister.
Mrs. Manning was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was a stay at home mom for many years. As her children grew older, she began to work outside the home. She later retired from Civil Service after many devoted years.
Mrs. Manning will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her strength, courage, honor and patience.
Survivors include her daughters, Joann Green (Brad Mitchell) of Fortson, GA, and Jacqueline Blackmon (Dennis) of Columbus, GA; son, Bill Manning (JoAnn) of Lilburn, GA; grandchildren, Kevin Green, Kristen Ogletree (Garrett), Kaci, Katherine, Devyn, and Taylor Blackmon, and Will Manning; great granddaughter, Ashlyn Ogletree; sisters, Mieko and Nichiko of Japan and many nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank a very special angel, Mrs. Brenda Williams who was much more than a caregiver. Brenda and "Mrs. M" had a special bond that no words can express.
The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Franciscan Woods and Columbus Hospice for their support in Mrs. Manning's final days.
