Ms. Sears was born December 5, 1966 in Ft. Benning, GA., the youngest child of Gloria Sears, a native of Wisconsin, but an adopted Georgian. Doreen's tenacity and will to fight and focus on research came from this woman, who worked hard for many years to take care of her children. Doreen grew into a beautiful young woman with tremendous scholastic talent and decided to become a teacher. She began her career at Columbus Parks and Recreation as an Activity Leader Site Supervisor at J.D. Davis Elementary School. Upon graduation, she stayed with the Parks and Recreation working part time and her first teaching position was at J.D. Davis Elementary School.
Doreen made a difference in so many lives. She continued her education and was named an instructional specialist. She taught many educators herself, tracked data, and eventually focused mainly on literacy for primary and secondary education.
When diagnosed with the insidious disease of cancer, she threw herself into one clinical trial after another. She then became involved in the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and any and all awareness programs designed to assist strengthening will and information.
Doreen, a member of First Presbyterian, deeply loved her Church, Circle 8, Wednesday Night Suppers, and Bible Studies. Her special mission was the Anne Elizabeth Shephard Home and she worked with them often, bringing many others into her fold of caring for these precious girls.
Doreen's love of plants and animals made her appreciate the beauty of the outdoors. She loved hiking, riding her horses and enjoying family time and smores with Sigourney, Shelby, Bailey, Katy, and anyone else who cared to join.
She and her horse made their last trip in a timely manner just a few months ago.
Survivors include her friends, Cammy Currie and Marty Harrell both of Cataula, GA, mother, Gloria Peardot Sears, sisters, Debra Rocha (Frank) of Columbus, GA, Laura Harrell of Cataula, GA and Erin Johnson (Peter) of Columbus, GA, and brothers, Darby Sears (Maylinda) of Box Springs, GA, DeWayne Sears (Yolanda) of Columbus, GA, Michael Martin of Lawrenceville, GA, Curt Martin (Kristie) of Tuscaloosa, AL and Layne Martin of Cataula, GA.
Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to Anne Elizabeth Shephard Home outreach of Circle 8, or the Circle 8 Fund, c/o First Presbyterian Church 1100 1st Ave. Columbus, GA 31901 or American Cancer Society 233 12th St. Columbus, GA 31901.
