Donough "Don" Cole Hammonds

Donough "Don" Cole Hammonds died January 21, 2022 at the age of 82.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, February 25, 2022, at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church Chapel (4385 Lower Roswell Road Marietta GA 30068). A burial service will be held at a later date in his home town of Lancaster, Kentucky.

Don was born August 29, 1938 in Danville, KY to the late Colonel and Lilly Davis Hammonds. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1960.  He then served 26 years in the active Army and Army Reserves, stationed in Germany, Virginia, and Georgia. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He also worked for 34 years for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), retiring in 1997. Other than his parents he is preceded in death by his brother Joe W. and his sister-in-law Barbara.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Lynn Purdom Hammonds and his 3 children, Lieutenant Colonel Joe Purdom Hammonds (Pam), Mrs. Amy Kopacek (Tim), and Colonel Christopher Hammonds (Megan), his six grandchildren, Willow Hammonds, Cole Kropacek (Raquel), Jarod Kropacek, Eva, Adilay, Owen Hammonds, and his two great grandchildren, Elsie Lynn and Tucker Kropacek.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made to the MUST ministries of Marietta or the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina.
