Donald Gene Jones, 79, of Columbus, GA passed away Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Northridge Hospital.
A memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, August 30, 2018 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with visitation to follow the service.
Mr. Jones was born October 3, 1938 in Columbus, GA, the son of the late Zin R. Jones and Janet Sawyer Jones. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1958. He loved sports and played basketball. He was a big UGA fan, loved the Bulldogs. He loved his family and the ocean. He coached little league football and baseball for several years with Neal Wommack and Butch McVay.
He worked for Sears and became Manager of the shoe department. He then bought Winchester Shell which later became Don Jones Shell for 22 years. He worked for Napa Auto Parts and retired in 2004. After retirement, he spent time in the yard and traveled.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Donald Gene Jones, Jr., 4 brothers and sister, Betty.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia, son, David M. Jones of Columbus, daughter, Dianne Smith of LaGrange, GA, 2 granddaughters, Melanie Jones and Mary Beth Jones, 3 great grandsons, Brayden, Kolby and Justice, 2 step-daughters, Kelly Allford of Clarksville, TN and Tracy Kraft of Columbus, GA, 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
