Dennis Wayne Griffin, 72, of Columbus, Georgia died Sunday, March 28, 2021. A graveside funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Parkhill Cemetery 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, GA. 31907 with Pastor Ronnie Culpepper officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA.
Dennis was born May 25, 1948 in Columbus, Georgia to the late Ollie and Mary Frances Griffin. He graduated from Jordan High School and grew up in the triangle. He graduated from University of Georgia for undergraduate school then received his masters degree in urban planning from Auburn University. He was a softball coach at Pioneer Little League for over a decade. Dennis worked in the construction industry throughout his life, and was a consultant for many projects throughout Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Maryland and District of Columbia such as Catholic University, Tennessee-Tom Bigbee development, Peachtree-Dekalb FAA Control Tower, Cumberland Island restoration project, raising of the CSS Chattahoochee now located at the National Civil War Museum.
He was a professor in the masters program for urban development at Alabama A & M. He owned his own project management / architectural design firm with his brother Glenn which worked on projects such as the TSYS Richard W. Ussery North Center.
Dennis was a unique character who was comfortable in his own skin. He was adventurous, loved to travel, ride motorcycles and spend time with his grandkids. His humor and wit was legendary, as was his style. God broke the mold when he made Dennis, he was a true original.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years Romona Hicks Griffin, two daughters Kelei Sabatino (Jason) , Roswell, Reagan Sauls (Trey), Peachtree Corners, three grandchildren, Alexander and Aubrey Sabatino, and Griffin Sauls, two brothers, Glenn Griffin (Vicky), David Griffin (Elizabeth), nieces, Lindsey Woods, Keri Robbins, Nephew, Nick Griffin, God Daughters, Claire Dunlap (Josh), Jill Hester (John Dale), and mother-in-law, Jeanette Hicks.
In lieu of flowers, in honor of his two beloved dogs Ed and Truman, donations may be sent to Paws Humane Society, 4900 Milgen Rd. Columbus, GA 31907, or Columbus Hospice 7020 Macon Road, Columbus, GA. 31909.
