Dr. Davis Ronald Watson, Sr. 82, of Columbus, GA died Friday, March 16, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital.
A private interment will be held 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Parkhill Cemetery, followed at 11:00 A.M. by a public memorial service at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Edwin M. " Buddy" Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, March 19, 2012 from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA.
Dr. Watson was born July 23, 1929 in Columbus, GA son of the late Perry Davis Watson and Annie B. Spinks Watson. An Eagle Scout and an all-city defensive tackle for Jordan High School, Dr. Watson was a Blue Key Honor Society graduate of Mercer University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia. He did his residency in otorhinolaryngology at The Shea Clinic in Memphis, TN and began his medical practice in Columbus in 1964, practicing until his retirement in 1995. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, an FAA Flight Surgeon, a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves and the Georgia Air National Guard and was called to active duty during Desert Storm and was subsequently awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Sons of the American Revolution, past president of Historic Columbus, a board member, past treasurer and life trustee of the Columbus Museum, past president of the East Columbus Boys Club, member of Muscogee County Medical Society, a staff member of The Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital, chairman of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Committee of St. Francis, member of Planning Board of Columbus Consolidated Government, board member of Columbus Hospital Authority, board member of the Listening Eyes School of Columbus and member of the chancel choir at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Moseley Watson of Columbus, GA; two daughters, Lynn Norfleet (Ian) of Fredericksburg, VA and Lee Lombardy (Warren) of Winter Garden, FL; son, Davis Ronald Watson, Jr. (Julia) of Palm Coast, FL; brother-in-law, Donald L. Moseley (Donna) and their daughter, Amanda, of Columbus, GA; aunt, Estelle S. Jarrell of Butler, GA; and five grandchildren, Andrew Philpott, Katherine Philpott, Davis Watson, III, Mary Ruth Watson and Georgia Lombardy.
