David Kenneth "Ape" Watkins, 85, of Columbus, GA died Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Columbus Hospice House.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Britt David Baptist Church, 2801 W. Britt David Road, Columbus, GA with Rev Tim Jones officiating. A private interment will be held in Riverdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA.

David was born December 22 1927 in Columbus, GA, son of the late Emmerry D. Watkins, Sr. and Glennie Mae West Watkins. David lived all of his life in Columbus, GA. He attended and graduated from Jordan High School where he was a star football player and was voted "Most Athletic". He was also co-captain of his football team at Jordan. David served his country in the U. S. Army in 1951 - 1952. In 1953, David married Bettie Cartledge. She was an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. They were blessed to have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on September 13, 2013. While working at Georgia Power Company, David attended the University of Georgia off campus. David was a Christian and taught Sunday School in his earlier years. He served as a deacon and was an active member of Britt David Baptist Church until he was no longer able to attend. David was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Anne Engelhardt.

Survivors include his wife, Bettie Cartledge Watkins of Columbus, GA; daughters, Donna M. Thigpen (Ed) of Midland, GA, Joan E. "Joni" Jones (George) of Cataula, GA, Linda A. Osborne of Montgomery, AL and Teresa G. Hardage (Todd) of Hogansville, GA; grandchildren, Lisa Beyer (Mike), Ben Thigpen (Carley), Ashley O. Osborne, Kaylyn R. Osborne, Jessica E. Jones, Garrett G. Jones, Charlton D. Hardage, Noah W. Hardage and Simmerly G. Hardage; great grandchildren, Maggie, Lola, Jack and Molly Beyer and Evie, Maddox and Rosemary Thigpen; brother, Dexter Watkins (Carolyn) and brother-in-law, Don Engelhardt.
