David P. Newsom, Sr., 81, of Columbus, GA died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gary Gibson officiating. A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday at Magnolia Park Cemetery in Warner Robins, GA. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Newsom was born May 9, 1931 in Furman, AL son of the late Pressley I. Newsome and Elizabeth G. Newsome. He retired from the U.S. Marines as a Gunery Sergeant having served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Among many of his prestigious medals and awards, he was also a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. He was a member of the VFW in Warner Robins and the National Rifle Association.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his great grandchild, Samantha Newsom.
Survivors include the mother of his children, Lavada Newsom of Columbus, GA, daughters, Denise N. Walker (David) of Columbus, GA and Chrystal Benton (Vic) of Columbus, GA, son, David P. Newsom, Jr. (Dorrie) of Dublin, GA, sisters, Mary Ceci of Tallahassee, FL and Sara Satterfield (Bobby) of Perry, GA, grandchildren, Shannon Newsom, Jessica Walker and Brianna Benton and great grandchildren, Michelle Newsom, Tyler Newsom, Taylor Newsom and Carey Newsom.
