David Keith Adkins, 76 of Columbus, GA passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2020.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 22, 2020 in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. J. Grantham officiating. Visitation will follow the services at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Boulevard, Columbus, GA.
Coach Adkins was born October 26, 1943 in South Charleston, WV.; son of the late Edward Wyatt Adkins and Beulah Marion Grounds. He voluntarily served as a Navy corpsman attached to the Marine Corp. during the Vietnam War and retired from the Muscogee County School District after 30 years of service. During that time he worked at Spencer High School, Rothschild Middle School and Richards Middle School where he served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and mentor to many young education professionals. After retiring from MCSD Coach opened Southeast Regional Driving & Safety Academy in 2007, where he taught thousands of Columbus area teens how to drive safely and with confidence.
Coach had a deep love for each of his grandchildren, football, flying, and going to the Final 4 with his fellow coaches each year. Coach also worked as a General Contractor building homes in the Columbus area and had served as the Commander of the Civil Air Patrol locally.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Karen Taravella Adkins of Columbus, GA., sons, Brian Keith Adkins (Elizabeth Michelle) of Fayetteville, NC., Richard Anthony Webb (Melissa Dawn) of Franklin, GA,, David-Edward Arthur Adkins (Giannina Michelle) of Columbus, GA., brothers, Robert Adkins (Rachel) Beverly Hills, FL., George Adkins (Linda) Douglas, GA., grandchildren, Benjamin Keith Adkins, Baylee River Webb, Erin Elizabeth Adkins and Calliope Celia - Elizabeth Adkins.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make donations to the Richards Middle School Athletic Fund in honor of Coach Adkins.
