(Ret.) Major Danny Cooper Terry died peacefully Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at his home surrounded by family.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, July 8, 2017 at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Columbus, GA. with Rev. Dick Reese officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service in Stockwell Hall at St. Luke on Saturday at 12:30 pm. Burial with Military Honors will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 10 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
(Ret.) Major Terry was born July 19, 1939 in Langdale, AL to the late William Henry and Lillian Autrey Glass Terry. He entered the United States Army in 1957 and served eight years as an enlisted man attaining the rank of Staff SGT, before attending Infantry Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA where he graduated in 1965. He was assigned as an Executive Officer in the US Army Airborne School following OCS. In August of 1967, he joined The First Cavalry Division (Airmobile) as a Platoon Leader with C Company, 1st BN, 5th Cavalry. He assumed command of C-1-5 Cavalry in October of 1967 and led his troops through some of the toughest combat of the Vietnam War, including the Tet Offensive and the battle to relieve the Marine Base at Khe Sanh. On May 9th, 1968, just south of the DMZ, CPT Terry sustained serious wounds in a major daylight battle with an NVA Regiment. He spent the next year recuperating from these wounds before he returned to active service as an advisor to the Wisconsin Army National Guard and then in United States Army Support Thailand. He retired from service at Fort Benning as a Major in June of 1978. His military honors include: Bronze Star for Valor, Purple Heart, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Parachute Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Air Medal. In December of 2014, he was inducted into the National Infantry Association's Order of Saint Maurice at the rank of Centurion for his lifelong dedication and service to the infantry.
Major Terry was a member of St. Luke Methodist Church and was active in service through the respite program and Military Appreciation. He was also a devoted volunteer at the National Infantry Museum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John Dennis, James Leonard, and Roy Henry Terry, and three sisters, Madge Heaton VanHouten, Patsy Deloach, and Sybil Holmes.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judy Scales Terry; two daughters, Melissa Terry Fish (Anton) of Columbus, GA; Laura M. Terry (Kevin Brown) of West Fork, AR; and one son, J. Kelvin Terry (Vivian) of Birmingham, AL; two sisters, Janice Dallas of West Point, GA and Mary Fetner of Valley, AL; five grandchildren Bailey Flynn (Colby), Ivey Flynn Brooks (Michael), Lacey Flynn, Hollen Terry and Madden Terry; and his military family.
