Daniel "Danny" Durham, 54, of Hamilton, GA, passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2018.
Danny was born on January 12, 1964 in Moultrie, GA to Bill and Nonie Durham. He graduated from Dougherty County High School in 1982. He continued his education at Georgia Southern University where he earned two Bachelor of Science Degrees in Therapeutic Recreation and Health and Physical Education. Danny played football for the Georgia Southern Eagles from 1982-1986 where he was a starting linebacker on the 1985 and 1986 National Championship teams. Danny also earned his Masters of Education from Georgia Southern University in 1992 and an Education Specialist Degree from Lincoln Memorial University in 2000.
Danny married Julie Griggs Durham on June 19, 1993; they were married 25 years. Together they have 3 children: Jordan (23), Graham (21), and Anna (14).
Danny was an assistant principal and athletic director at Harris County High School in Hamilton, GA for 4 years. He also served as an assistant football coach there starting in 2012. Before his time at HCHS, Danny started his career as a defensive line coach for the Georgia Southern Eagles from 1990-91 where he won two national championships. From there he went on to be an assistant football coach at Rabun County and Stevens County. Danny spent 12 years as head football coach at three high schools: Gordon Central, Franklin County, and Rabun County.
Danny enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, running, teaching Sunday school, and spending weekends at their cabin in North Georgia.
Danny Durham is survived by his wife, three children, and his father, Bill Durham. He is also survived by 6 siblings and their spouses: Diana Mayhall, David Durham (Debbie), Debbie Fain (Johnny), Billy Durham (Sherri), Laura Taylor (Dennis), Holly Hughes (Brad). He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Anne Coulter Griggs, and sister-in-law, Cecilia Griggs Phillips (Joe). Danny's family also includes numerous nieces and nephews.
The celebration of Danny's life will be held at Evangel Temple Assembly of God Church, 5350 Veterans Parkway, in Columbus, starting at 2 p.m. The service will be officiated by Pastor Paul Thomas, Dr. Johnny Fain, and Pastor Joe Phillips. The Durhams will receive family and friends following the service, according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory' 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Harris County High School in his name. Checks should be made payable to the Coach Danny Durham Scholarship Fund and mailed to HCHS at 132 Barnes Mill Rd. Hamilton, GA 31811.
