CWO-4 (Ret.) Bernard William "Bud" Sloan, 92, of Columbus, GA passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at Gentiva Hospice with his daughter, Betty Plock, and his son, David, at his side.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, December 7, 2015 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church 621 17th Ave. Columbus, GA 31906 with Pastor Brad Arnholt officiating. Interment will be held at 2:00 PM Monday at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Chief Sloan was born June 22, 1923 in Atlantic City, NJ to Frank Longdon Sloan and Emily Cecily Dietrich Sloan. He was a decorated and proud U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. After his retirement from the army, he was an agent for Lutheran Brotherhood Life Insurance. He loved to travel and had visited countless countries. Even though his wife, Betty, always declared that she had had her fill of traveling while they were in the military, she was always by Bud's side when it came time to take a trip. Chief Sloan was so proud of his 68 ½ year marriage and always made sure that extra ½ year was understood. He was also a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Columbus.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his dear wife of 68 ½ years, Elizabeth Jane Rice Sloan, his sister, Roberta Ruth Marie Sloan Keeny, and his great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Drawdy.
He is survived by his children, Bill Sloan (Betty) of Columbus, GA, Linda Shirah (Jerry) of Duluth, GA, Betty Ann Plock (Bill) of Ellerslie, GA and David Sloan (Nancy) of Smiths Station, AL. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 2 great- great grandchildren, and 3 loving nieces.
