Born on November 13, 1946, in Ft. Benning, GA, Jerry’s early years were shaped by the love and guidance of his late parents, Arthur A. and Merle Willis. Although he experienced the deep loss of his beloved son, Jerry A. Willis, Jr., Jerry’s spirit remained resilient, a testament to his strength and loving nature.
Jerry’s life was one of service and dedication, values instilled in him from a young age. He proudly served his country for seven years in the Marine Corps, embodying the principles of honor and commitment. After his military career, Jerry continued to serve his community through his work with the United States Postal Service, from which he retired after many years of faithful service. His colleagues remember him as a reliable and diligent worker, always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a member of several military organizations; DAV, VFW, American Legion, Purple Heart Association, Marine Corps League, Marine Corps Association, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, 3rd Marine Division Association where he served as Sgt. at Arms, and 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Association, where he served as President.
Education was a cornerstone of Jerry’s life. He was a proud graduate of Gordon Military College, where he cultivated a love for learning that stayed with him throughout his life. This passion for knowledge fueled his interest in military research, a hobby that allowed him to stay connected to his roots and honor the history of those who served.
Jerry was a man of many interests, with a particular fondness for yard work. His hands were rarely still, as he found joy and solace in the simple act of tending to his garden, creating a space of beauty and tranquility for all to enjoy. Friends and family often remarked on how Jerry’s yard was a reflection of his character-meticulously cared for and welcoming.
Described by those who knew him best as interesting, handy, and loving, Jerry’s personality was a tapestry of fascinating stories, practical skills, and a warm heart. His presence was a comfort, his laughter a joy, and his guidance a steady force in the lives of his loved ones.
Jerry’s memory will be cherished by his wife of 48 years Mildred Willis, dear sisters, Jane (Jack) Nebl and Rhonda (Randy) Mixon, who stood by him through the highs and lows of life. His legacy will live on through his nieces, Stacy Rainey, Ashlee (Michael) Holbein, and Adrienne Mixon, and his nephew, Andrew (Susan) Nebl, all of whom he adored. Jerry took great delight in the lives of his three great-nephews, cherishing every moment he spent with them and imparting wisdom that will guide them through their journeys ahead.
