Albert Nutter (Bull) Garland, Lt. Col., Infantry, U.S. Army (Ret), 91, of Columbus, passed away Monday, February 24, 2014 at his home.
Funeral services will be held11:00 AM, Friday, February 28, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907. Interment with full military honors will be held at Parkhill Cemetery, in the Veterans Garden. The family will receive friends from Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
Col. Garland was born in New Orleans, LA, November 7, 1922 and was of the Roman Catholic faith. He was a graduate of Louisiana State University and a twenty-six year veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a highly decorated officer serving with the 84th Infantry Division in the European Theater during World War II. He was an author, educator, editor of the Infantry Magazine, and a lifelong and active proponent of education.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-two years, Adele Muller Garland, daughter, Barbara Martin, parents, Edmund J. and Clara Nutter Garland, three brothers, and one sister.
He is survived by three children, Susan Anderson and husband Alan of El Paso, TX; Anne Murray and husband Dale of Baton Rouge, LA; Mark Garland and wife Yvette of Greensboro, NC; son-in-law Bob Martin of Decatur, GA; sister, Kathleen Smith of Covington, LA, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and longtime family friend, Patricia Weekley.
The family gives heartfelt thanks to their father's caregivers who were treasured companions.
