Christa Marie Dyer Smith

Christa Marie Dyer Smith, passed away on August 25, 2022 at Columbus Hospice House. Chris, as her close friends and family called her, was 82 at the time of her death. She left this earth after a long battle with cancer. She was with family and holding the hand of her love, her spouse, Ret MSG James Smith.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 10, 2022 in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907

Christa Maria (Chris) was born in Frankfurt, Germany on May 26, 1940 to Maria and Welle Muller. She loved her home country very much but when she became an Army spouse to her first husband, Chuck Dyer (deceased) Chris came to the US and landed in Columbus, Ga. Where she remained until her death.  Chris and Chuck raised 3 children. Barbara, Glenn, and Angela in Columbus Ga.

Chris will be greatly remembered for her cooking which along with her cakes will go down in history as phenomenal! She also took pride in her spotless home, and if you visited you knew to remove your shoes at the door! Each year Chris sent out 100 hand selected Christmas cards, a tradition she much enjoyed.  If you were the blessed recipient you also knew how she waited excitedly for one back in the mail!

Chris and James Smith, her beloved spouse, loved to travel. Hawaii and Vegas was one of their favorite vacation spots! They shared many fond memories of their time spent in Hawaii. In Vegas Chris loved to try her hand at the Casinos! They also enjoyed listening to jazz music together. Chris and James were a very happy and well suited couple for over 30 years.

She was also a very generous and charitable person. She loved to give gifts of food to the missions in Columbus. Especially at holidays when she donated turkeys.  But, St Jude’s Children's Hospital was dear to her heart and was her favored charity to donate to. Her crochet blankets will be treasured for a lifetime by those who were gifted with one. She also crocheted many booties for babies.

Chris was also a retired civil servant. You may also remember her from her dedicated service in the records room at Martin Army Hospital, Ft Benning, Ga.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, Maria and Welle Mueller of Germany; her son, Glenn Steven Dyer of Columbus Ga (August 27, 2020)

Left to cherish her memory are her Spouse, Ret MSG James Smith;  Daughters both of Columbus, Ga, Barbara (Bobbie) Faye Dyer Cristobal  (Teodoro Cristobal), Amanda  Grimsley , of Macon, Ga, Angela (Angie) Dyer Copeland; Son, Christopher Copland of Charlotte, NC; Sister, Ursula Christenson (Heinz Christenson)  of Sulzbach, Germany; Stepdaughters, Patty Guthrie of Dalton, Ga, their children, Michael and Michelle Guthrie, Felicia Smith Saunders (Russell Saunders) of Columbus, GA, their children, Bryson and Brandon Saunders; Brother-in-law, Samuel Smith of Dayton, Ohio; Many friends and neighbors, along with other extended family members including; great grandchildren and step grandchildren. She will be missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Chris’s favorite charity,  St Jude’s Childrens Hospital.
