Chester Henry Marsh, 92, of Columbus, GA, died January 14, 2014 in Columbus.
Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 PM, Friday, January 17, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. David Lix officiating. A private interment will be held in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Chester was born on February 4, 1921 in Owego, New York, to the late Irene Floyd and the late Arthur Marsh. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran of the United States Army, serving proudly as a paratrooper and retiring in 1959 as a SFC. He was in combat action as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Battle of the Bulge and the Korean War Conflict. During his military career he received many distinguished medals including 2 bronze stars and was stationed in many different countries. He was in jump school at Ft. Benning when he met and married the joy of his life, the late Mureen Dunn Marsh, on September 4, 1943.
Upon retirement from the Army, Chester was employed by Civil Service at Ft. Benning, from which he also retired. He has lived in Columbus for the past 54 years. He was a devoted husband and proud father. He loved to hunt, cook, and grill outdoors.
Chester was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Mureen Dunn Marsh, his father, Arthur Marsh, his mother, Irene Floyd, his brothers, Lester Marsh and Johnny Marsh.
Survivors include his three sons, Chester Wayne Marsh (Carolyn) of Lakeland, FL, Richard Alden Marsh (Bettina), of Phenix City, AL, and John Randy Marsh (Debbie) of Mulberry, FL; eight grandchildren, Tracy, Stephanie, Kimberly, Mandy, Tiffany, Joshua, Caleb, and Nathan; and seven great-grandchildren.
