Charles Robert Sias, M.D., Family Physician and Surgeon in Orlando, FL, U.S. Naval Officer in World War II, Patriot, loving Husband, devoted Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather, passed away at the age of 92 at Spring Harbor in Columbus, GA. He was surrounded by three daughters. Dr. Sias gave 41 years to the medical profession. He served as a past President of Florida's American Medical Association. He was the son of Azariah Boody Sias PhD, a professor Emeritus at Ohio University, and Grace Furbish Sias, daughter of a Presbyterian minister.
Dr. Sias was born July 19, 1918 in Rochester, NY. Charles Sias graduated and obtained his M.D. Degree from the University of Rochester Medical School in Rochester, NY in June 1941 at the age of 22.
He received his Naval commission and was assigned as ship's physician on the destroyer U.S.S. Butler in the Atlantic Fleet. Aboard this destroyer he was on convoy duty in the Atlantic and was in combat at the invasion of Omaha Beach. He left the service as Lieutenant Commander. In 1947, Dr. Sias went to Orlando, FL as resident surgeon for the Orange Memorial Hospital and went into private practice there for 23 years.
Charles Robert Sias is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Josephine Sias who resides at Spring Harbor in Columbus, GA. Mary and "Chuck" were married November 19, 1944 at The Little Church around the Corner in New York City.
Dr. Sias is survived by three adoring daughters, Nancy Sias Kustermann of LaGrange, GA who was born in San Francisco, CA, Virginia Mary Sias Vilensons of Las Vegas, NV and Cynthia Ann Sias Wales of C'oeur d'Alene, ID, who were born in Orlando, FL, and sons-in-law, Robert Kustermann and Dr. Alan Wales. He would want his third beloved son-in-law John Vilensons, Colonel in the Air Force, deceased, remembered.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Christine Ashley Trapnell Sporrer, daughter of Nancy Kustermann and James Harold Trapnell, Jr. and his grandson-in-law, Kevin Sporrer of Newnan, GA. Chrissy and Kevin blessed Dr. and Mary Sias with three great grandchildren, Kaylin Vela Sporrer, Charles Sias "Chaz" Sporrer, and Colton Jerry Sporrer.
He is survived by his grandson, Thomas Harper and granddaughter-in-law, Timna Harper of Orinda, CA, and their children, Jaden Anneliesa Harper and Lucas Asher Harper. Tom is the son of Cynthia Sias Wales.
Dr. Charles Robert Sias's funeral will be at Arlington National Cemetery on April 15, 2011. Full Military Honors will begin at the Chapel at 1 PM. McMullen Funeral Home in Columbus, GA is handling the arrangements.
