Charles Emory "Red" McDaniel, Jr., 83, of Columbus, Ga died Monday, November 3, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 7, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, 1212 12th street, Columbus, Ga., with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. Burial will be private at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at home according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Red was born at home in Dawson, Georgia on July 10, 1931. He was the only child of Elizabeth Oxford and Charles Emory McDaniel, Sr. They moved to Columbus in 1934. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1950 where he excelled in sports; he was quarterback of the football team, played safety, punted, also lettered in baseball and track and was named to the All Bi City football team. He began college at the University of Florida on a football scholarship, but was injured early on. He then entered Mercer University in Macon, Ga. where he was Vice President of his senior class, active in Phi Delta Theta fraternity, ROTC and intramural sports. Following his graduation in 1955 with an AB degree in Economics he entered the army and served for two years as a First Lieutenant at Fort Rucker, AL.
In April of 1956 he married Joanne (Jo) Wommack of Macon, GA. After completion of his military service they moved to Columbus, and Red began his professional career as an agent for State Farm Insurance Companies. He later worked at Columbus Interstate Insurance Agency, the R.P. Spencer Jr. Insurance Agency and when he retired in 1996 he was the owner and president of the McDaniel Insurance Company.
He first ran for public office in 1968. He was elected to a four year term on the "old "city commission. After serving two years, that form of government was abolished with consolidation of city and county. All officials were required to resign and run for re-election and in 1970 he was elected to Council Post 3. During the elections from 1982 -1988, he served City Council Post 4. He resigned council in 1974 to run for the State Senate. However, that was the year of Watergate and only one republican was elected in Columbus; the candidate who ran for the seat he resigned. In 1992, he once again ran for office and from that date until his death he served in Post 8.
Red is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jo, his son CharlesW. "Chuck" McDaniel (Lisa), 7 grandchildren: Charlie McDaniel (Carson), Sam McDaniel, Trent Nobles, Peyton Nobles, Carrie Johnson (Brett), two great grandchildren; Averie and Easton Johnson, two nephews: Dr. Mark Murphy (Daphne) and Andrew Murphy (Laura), a niece, Jennifer McCollum (Mitch) and five great nephews. Red was preceded in death by his son, Scott, who died in 1998, his parents, Emory and Elizabeth McDaniel and in-laws, W.A. and Florence Wommack and sister in-law, Peggy Murphy (Jack)
He was always active in civic life of Columbus: Member of the Sertoma Club, where he served as President and Governor, a member and Vice Chairman of Columbus Visitors Convention Bureau, a member and of the Georgia Association of Independent Insurance Agents, a member of the Columbus Association of Independent Insurance Agents, a member of Columbus Chamber of Commerce, the board of the Columbus YMCA and member and past President of the Columbus Mercer Alumni Association, a member and committee chairman of the Georgia Municipal Association and the board of directors for Georgia Mutual Insurance Association, a member of the board of directors of Green Island Country Club, and a member of the Columbus Jaycees, Co-Chairman of American Heart Association Heart Walk in 1998, the board of The United Way of Columbus. He served on the board of Southtrust Bank, Wachovia Bank and the Association of the United States Army. Among the honors he received are "Boss of the Year" by the Insurance Women of Columbus, Outstanding Young Man in America by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Superior Club Leadership by Sertoma Club International, Distinguished Governor Award by the Sertoma Club International, Columbus Chamber of Commerce Achievement Award for the Contact Club, Mister Chairman Award for the American Association of Managing Agents, The Edward Dunlap Award given by the Independent Agents of Georgia for Outstanding Community Service and numerous trophies from tournaments during his golfing days.
