Charles Hampton Jenkins, Jr., 90, a resident of the Morningside community in Columbus, GA since 1926 died on December 11, 2010, shortly after a fall at his home. His wife of 62 years, Dora Moore Jenkins, predeceased him in death in September.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Morningside Baptist Church 6065 Morningside Dr. Columbus, GA 31909 with Reverend Thad Smith and Reverend James R. Cook officiating. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 and also after the funeral service on Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Jenkins was born July 3, 1920 in Phenix City, AL, the son of the late Charles H. Jenkins, Sr. and Gladys J. Jenkins. As a young man, he and his daddy delivered as many as 700 daily copies of The Ledger-Enquirer throughout Columbus. He graduated in the first graduating class of Jordan High School in 1938. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II in Europe as a member of "I" Company, 254th Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, two Purple Hearts, the Good Conduct Medal, the Expert Rifle Marksmanship Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and a Presidential Unit Citation.
Mr. Jenkins was a plasterer by trade for 27 years, then returned to school and graduated from Columbus Technical College as an HVAC technician. He retired in 1985 after working 16 years at J. Marvin Mills Heating and Air Conditioning. He was a man who loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, and in 1952, he was baptized as the first member after the chartering of Morningside Baptist Church. He was an active volunteer in all areas of his church and served as chairman of the deacons for many years. He also was a Mason for over 65 years and was a member of and Past Master of Midland Masonic Lodge. He was a participant in local midget racing in the late 1940's assisting E.C. Philipps in building several winning midget racers. In addition, he loved baseball and was a president of Northern Little League in the mid-1960s.
Mr. Jenkins is predeceased by his youngest child, W. Lester Jenkins, his brother, Theo Jenkins, and his sisters, Esther J. Slocumb and Betty J. Grimes. He is survived by his sister and our "Meme" Mrs. Mary J. Mills and her husband, Marvin. His children are Robert A. Jenkins and Elizabeth J. Landrum. His grandchildren are Jacqueline and James Daniel, Elizabeth and Jason Davis, Ellen and Colby Brewer, and their mother, Margaret Jenkins, Shane Landrum, Susan and David Swain, Joanna Landrum, and their father, Terrence J. Landrum. His five great-grandchildren are William Davis and a baby brother coming in February, Judah Brewer, and Mariah and Micah Landrum. His nieces and nephews include the extended families of Bill and Ruth Grimes, Brent and Laura Grimes, Wayne and Diane Slocumb, Carole S. and Charles Logwood, Judith S. Hafner, Linda S. and Randy March. His family also includes his next door neighbors and faithful friends for over 60 years, the daughters of the late Mr. Everett and Mrs. Omie Green.
