Charles Franklin Gilbert, 82, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Columbus Hospice House.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, September 26, 2011 at Central Baptist Church 1407 Broad St. Phenix City, AL 36868 with Reverend Dexter James officiating. A private interment will be held at Lakeview Memory Gardens. Members of the Columbus Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Gilbert was born May 24, 1929 in Tallassee, AL son of the late Benjamin Franklin Gilbert and Mamie Teal Gilbert. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. He retired after 20 years as the Director of Engineering for the Columbus Consolidated Government. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Phenix City, was the 1991 President of the Columbus Lions Club and Former Chairman of the annual Lions Club Broom Sales and was involved in Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include his loving wife, Thelma Williams Gilbert of Columbus, GA, daughter, Denise Unley (David) of St. Petersburg, FL, son, Dennis Gilbert (Lisa) of Leesburg, GA, sister, Sharon Mayo of Clarence, IA, six grandchildren, Nikki, Tara, Chelsea, Catibrie and Dennis, Jr., and three great grandchildren, Gavin, Brayen, and Zaden.
