Charles Walter Collins, 80, of Columbus, GA died Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at his residence. A memorial service will be at 2:00pm Saturday, March 5, 2022, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Columbus, GA. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in Stockwell Hall, also at St. Luke Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be made to the ministry of St. Luke UMC particularly the Samaritan’s Fund or the Discovery Sunday School Class.
Charles Collins was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Charles Winifred and Delorus Bush Collins on January 28, 1942. He was baptized and reared in the United Methodist Church where his mother served as the church secretary and his father on the Administrative Board. After service in the United States Navy on the USS Sumner and study at Auburn University, he married Barbara Carnley Collins and the two began to raise a family nurtured by the Church and filled with love.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, son Charles Walter Collins, Jr (Chuck) and his wife Lori and daughter Nichole Collins. Charles’ grandchildren are Alexis Conley, Lauren Cutsforth, William Charles MacMillan, and Samuel MacMillan. His great grandchildren are Sebastian, Brighton, Penny, and most recently Greyson Charles who represents the 4th generation to carry his name. Dubbed “Pop” by his grandchildren, Charles was a playful and loving father and grandfather who enjoyed exploring the world with his family. His career was marked by 25 years of service at WLTZ in Columbus.
