Carolyn Herrington Gnann, 93, of Columbus, died Thursday, August 21, 2014 at The Gardens at Calvary. Funeral services will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 with Reverend Dr. Shirley M. Redmond officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA. A private burial service will be at Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Ebenezer, GA.
Carolyn was born September 23, 1920 to Seaborn and Ethel (Von) Haesler Herrington in Sardis, Georgia. She moved away at age 15 to attend Georgia State College for Women, graduated in 1938, and became a great, creative teacher in Southeast Georgia until 1945. Carolyn married William Shields "Bill" Gnann, Sr. in 1942. After WWII, they moved to Atlanta while he studied dentistry at Emory. They moved to Columbus in 1950, where Carolyn mothered their children while managing their dental practice until they retired in 1989. Carolyn worked with the Cub Scouts, PTA, and St. Matthew Lutheran Church Altar Guild. She enjoyed painting, art, sewing, cooking, gardening and reading. She was a member of the George Walton Chapter of the DAR (Georgia Salzburger Society) and the Windsor Park Garden Club. She loved flowers and some of her camellia blossoms won blue ribbons. She was always caring for others and went out of her way to help and comfort people. She was multi-talented - still raking her yard, washing her car, and refinishing her kitchen cabinets when she was 88. Only her inability to place the ladder prevented her from cleaning her roof. She jokingly called herself "The Little Red Hen," due to her "then I'll do it myself" spirit.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Dr. William S. Gnann, after 64 years of marriage. Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Jackie Gnann Weaver (Andy) of Auburn, AL, three sons, Robert (Meredith) of Lake Harding, GA, William (Charlene) of Columbus, and Joseph, also of Columbus; sister Patricia (Johnny) Mallard of Statesboro, GA; grandson Robert Gnann, Jr. (Robin), grandaughter Ann Marie Sanders (Ronnie); great-grandchildren Wyatt and Gracie Brewer, Caroline Gnann, and Trey and Lily Sanders, all of Columbus. A host of nieces, nephews and cousins also mourn her passing. Her acerbic sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of The Gardens at Calvary, the Greenhouse, Columbus Hospice, and special caregiver Pat Brooks.
Flowers will be accepted, or friends may donate to a charity of their choice in Carolyn's memory.
