Cammy Diaz Marchetti, 53 of Columbus, Georgia died Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Columbus Hospice.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. John Fugh, Jr. and Rev. Dr. P. Shane Green officiating. Those who are unable to attend the service may view it live by visiting live.spumccolumbus.com
Cammy was born April 22, 1968 in Ponce, Puerto Rico to Luis A. Diaz and Joyce Annette Stewart. She is preceded in death by her father-in-law Richard A. Marchetti. Cammy moved to Columbus when she was two years old. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1986. After graduating from high school, she attended Columbus State University and graduated with a Master / Specialist Degree in 1990. Cammy then taught for 25 years in the Muscogee County School District, most recently spending eleven years at Double Churches Elementary School. Cammy was nominated as Teacher of the Year several times throughout her career and in 2011 was selected MCSD Top Ten Teacher of the Year finalist. She was loved and adored by her students and fellow teachers throughout the district.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing with the church choir. She was also a member of the Junior League of Columbus. Cammy will be remembered by her family and friends for her fighting spirit and positive outlook on life. During her long battle with ovarian cancer, she never stopped helping others and she was a very active member of the Muscogee Teal Magnolias, a local Ovarian Cancer/ Gynecological Cancer Support Group for the Columbus, Georgia area.
She is survived by her husband of almost 30 years, Michael “Mike “Arthur Marchetti, two sons; William” Will “ Arthur Marchetti of Macon, Georgia; and Carson Hayes Marchetti of Columbus, Georgia; mother Joyce Annette Stewart of Columbus, Georgia; and father Luis A. Diaz of Puerto Rico; sister Deanne Tabb (Trey) of Columbus, Georgia; and brothers Luis Diaz (Lisa) of Columbus, Georgia; Charles Solis (Nancy) of Pine Mountain, Georgia; and mother-in-law Paula N. Marchetti of Columbus, Georgia; and brother-in-laws Matt Marchetti (Christy) of Phenix City, Alabama, Marty Marchetti (Kathy) of Woodstock, Georgia; and John Marchetti of Atlanta, Georgia; eight nephews, four nieces, three great-nephews and two great-nieces.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Gregory Sfakianos and all of the doctors and nurses at St. Francis Hospital and the John B. Amos Cancer Center for their tireless efforts on Cammy’s behalf.
In Lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund in her memory has been established to support students with the financial need who are enrolled at Columbus State University’s Early Childhood Education program. Contributions can be made at any local Synovus Bank branch in Columbus, Georgia.
