Billy Joe Townson, Sr., 83, of Columbus, GA died Monday, June 3, 2013 at Gentiva Hospice.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, June 6, 2013 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Mike Reeves officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Townson was born December 24, 1929 in Columbus, GA son of the late Wilburn C. and Jessie Mae Elkins Townson. He was a Christian. He was proud to be a graduate of Jordan High School. He worked for 33 years with the U.S. Post Office as a Bulk Mail Technician. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and camping with his wife. He was a member of the Living Word Full Gospel Church and attended the Faith Builders Sunday School Class at Trinity Temple Assembly of God.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Baby Boy Townson, sister, Lois Townson, and brother, Ralph Townson.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jimmie Ruth Pope Townson of Columbus, GA, sons, Billy Joe Townson, Jr. of Washington State, Richard M. Townson (Nancy) of New Mexico and Royce E. Townson (Stella) of Fortson, GA, grandchildren, Stacy M. Strickland (Reed) of Salem, AL, Clayton E. Townson (Lauren) of Columbus, GA and Manning Townson of Australia, two great grandchildren, Hailey B. Strickland and Colby A. Strickland both of Salem, AL, and several nieces and nephews.
