Billy Gene Robertson, 79, born in Fayetteville, West Virginia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Columbus Hospice with family at bedside.
Graveside service will be held 2:00 PM EST Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell, AL. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Robertson was born April 29, 1938 son of the late Willie V. Robertson and Leona Aliff Proffitt. Sergeant First-Class Billy Robertson was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving 4 tours in Vietnam, where he earned several medals including the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze stars. He also earned The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, 2 Overseas Service Bars, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, 6 Service Stripes, Expert Badge (M-16), Expert Badge (M-14), National Defense Service Medal with OLC and Good Conduct Medal 6th Award. He retired at Fort Benning after 20 years of service with the Army. After a successful military career, he retired from Union Carbide as a machinist tool and die maker. He was a member of the Midland Masonic Lodge and American Legion.
His discipline and patriotism remained with him throughout his life. He had a strong devotion to his family, anyone who knew him can attest to. "PawPaw" loved spending time with his family; he passed on his knowledge and skills to his grandchildren that they will forever cherish. He loved fishing, tinkering in his workshop and playing outside with his grandchildren. His life was full of love, he would give a helping hand to anyone. His legacy will live forever in all of us.
Mr. Robertson is preceded in death by his brother, Jim Robertson.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dora Gerda Robertson; three children: Martha (Greg) Barfield, Dora (Mark) Reid, and Gene (Tatum) Robertson. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Melissa (Scott), Kimberly, Amber (Eli), Brittany (Shiloh), Matt, Justin, Jakob, Aidyn and Joshua; six great-grandchildren: Persephone, Lucas, Natalie, Reader, Landon and Mason; two brothers: Jerry (Beck) Robertson and Dave (Dorothy) Robertson and one sister: Faye Wriston.
