Billy Allen Phelps

Billy Allen Phelps, known affectionately to many as Bill, was a man who set a high bar for a life well-lived. Born on May 5, 1935, in Banks, Alabama, he passed away on November 15, 2023, in Columbus, Georgia, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, November 20, 2023 at Beallwood Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Duncan officiating. Interment will be held in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. Bill’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be active and former deacons of Beallwood Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 19, 2023 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Bill was a devoted family man and was married to his wife, Annette, for more than 63 years.  It was a marriage of enduring commiment and mutual respect.  As a father to Cynthia Phelps Conner, Michael Allen Phelps (Melissa), and Elizabeth Phelps Lee (Todd), he instilled in his children the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion. Bill's joy was multiplied ninefold with the arrival of each grandchild, and he took pride in the accomplishments of Hill Whatley, Jane Tauber (Korry), Parker Lee, Brady Phelps (Natalie), Preston Lee, Sarah Phelps, Joshua Phelps, Paden Lee, and Wesley Phelps. His great-grandchildren Bentley Phelps, Della Phelps, Jordan Tauber, and Ada Phelps were the apples of his eye, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He is also survived by his sister, Jeanette Phelps Elkins (Roy), and several nieces and nephews.

Other than his parents Louie Frank and Katie Lee Phelps, Bill was preceded in death by his step-father, Ellis J. Conyer, two brothers-- William Edward Phelps and John Franklin Phelps and his son-in-law Tracy Richard Conner.

Bill's service to his country was a defining chapter in his life. A proud member of the First Marine Division, he served during the Korean Conflict, demonstrating bravery and resilience that would remain with him throughout his life. His military service laid the foundation for his strong work ethic and commitment to his community, qualities that he carried over into his professional life.

Bill was a faithful member of Beallwood Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. His faith was his guiding light, and he carried its teachings into every aspect of his life. His commitment to his church was a testament to his belief in the power of faith, community, fellowship, and service.
