Mrs. King was born May 6, 1929 in Columbus, GA daughter of the late Hardie Lee Hammock and Minnie Lee Lewis Hammock. She worked for Helms Groceries for many years but her primary job was taking care of family. Betty was a caregiver at heart. This spirit of caring was extended to all who were fortunate to know and love her. It was not unusual for someone in the neighborhood to ask for help and receive a meal or other token of generosity. Betty's focus in later years was caring for her husband. Betty and Kenneth were married for 59 years but their relationship began almost 70 years ago. They were never apart and their commitment to each other serves as a beautiful testimony of their love. She was "MeeMee" to her granddaughters. They brought great joy to her later years.
Betty was an avid gardener. Her yard was filled with color and red rose bushes were her favorite. She took delight in showing off the newest blossom or addition to the garden.
A promise was made to Betty by her children and that promise was honored. Betty died in the house where she was born, surrounded by a small but loving circle of family and friends.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant grandson, Ethan Martin King.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Earl King, Sr. of Columbus, GA, children, Kenneth Earl King, Jr. (Ginger) of Columbus, GA and Lea Ann Crews (Casey) of Phenix City, AL, grandchildren, Stormy Crews and Olivia Crews, both of Phenix City, AL, sister, Louise Vale of Columbus, GA, life long friend, Betty Sue Akin, caregiver Elizabeth Griggs and numerous nieces and nephews.
Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to Columbus Hospice House 7020 Moon Rd. Columbus, GA 31909 www.columbushospice.com.
