Command Sergeant Major (CSM/Ret) Bernard E. Bentfeld, 97, of Columbus died Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Piedmont Midtown in Columbus, Georgia.

A Celebration of his life with Full Military Honors and Masonic Rites will be held 4 PM Saturday, March 14, 2020 in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Colonel Fred Hard officiating. A private interment will be held at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery. A Visitation will follow the services at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.

CSM Bentfeld was born November 14, 1922 in Youngstown, Ohio son of the late Bernard E. Bentfeld, Sr. and Edith Richard Bentfeld. He retired a CSM with 23 1/2 years in the United States Army in the Armor Branch where he served in World War II. He also was a member of Rose Hill Masonic Lodge where he served as a Mason for over 50 years. He loved tinkering with the latest smart electronic devices, playing golf, sports cars and even played tennis while serving in the Army.

Survivors include his wife of 76 years, Helen Kieltsch Bentfeld of Columbus, GA. His two sons, Charles (Chuck) Bentfeld (Martha) of Columbus, Ga. and Bernard {Bud) Bentfeld of Phenix City, AL. Two grandchildren, Candice Edwards (Joey) of Ft. Campbell, Ky., Marty Bentfeld (Jessica) of Columbus, Ga., three great grandchildren, Jordan Edwards, Berkleigh Williams, Emma Edwards, and Brayden Bentfeld.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Rose Hill Masonic Lodge 915 31st Street Columbus, Ga., 31904.
