Benjamin Bussey Gordy Jr., 76, of Columbus, Georgia passed peacefully from this life to begin his eternity in heaven at his beach home in Panama City Beach, Florida on September 1, 2017 surrounded by his family.
A Home Going Celebration will be held 11:00 AM Saturday September 09, 2017 at Wynnbrook Baptist Church with Dr. Craig Bowers, Dr. Kevin Calhoun and Dr. Dun Gordy officiating. A private family interment will be held. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, Ga.
Mr. Gordy was born June 17, 1941 in Columbus, Ga. son of the late Benjamin Bussey Gordy, Sr. and Dorothy Ruth Lindsay Gordy, Ben graduated from Columbus High School Class of 1959. He earned a Building Science degree and an Army R.O.T.C. commission from Auburn University. He honorably served in the Army Corp of Engineers building roads in Thailand during the Vietnam Conflict.
Ben was a lifelong member of Wynnton / Wynnbrook Baptist church where he faithfully served as a lay leader in many capacities and was a member of The Light Sunday School class. He was a member of The Chattahoochee River Club., The Executive Club, and a past president of the Muscogee Civitan Club.
Ben's commercial construction career spanned over 50 years. In July of 1985, Ben B. Gordy Construction Co. was established and for the next 32 years, he built schools, churches, and medical offices. He was a gifted builder and enjoyed using his talents for the Lord. He was a member of the Associated General Contractors of America and a past board member of Georgia AGC. He was also a member of the Greater Columbus Home Builders Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Angela Noble Gordy his children Lisa (Isaac) Tillotson, Benjamin Bussey III "Bubba" (Lynn) Gordy, Regina (James) Yates all of Columbus, Ga., siblings, Inda Norsworthy of Columbus, Bill Gordy of Waverly Hall, and Beverly (Robert) Weaver of Ellerslie, grandchildren, Beau, Noble and Ashley Tillotson, Blaine, Ansleigh and Bree Gordy and Jacob, Rachael and Riley Yates and honorary granddaughter Cindy Peng and numerous nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to Amanda Clegg for her diligent preparation of organic meals which the family affectionately referred to as "Mandy's Ministry" and to Dr. William Fortson, Dr. Andrew Pippas and Emerald Coast Hospice for their compassionate care.
