Retired Assistant Police Chief Gil Slouchick, 67 of Columbus, Ga. passed away December 2, 2023, peacefully at his home surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, December 08, 2023 at Cascade Hills Church. Interment with Police Honors will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory. Honorary pallbearers will be current and retired public safety officers.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Penny Slouchick, his 4 children, Gil Slouchick Jr., Chris (Brittany) Slouchick, Amanda (Casey) Truett, and Ashlee Slouchick.  As well as 8 grandchildren, Lexi (Bryant), Callie, Jordan, Nick, Xander, Ryder, Ava, Arly and two sisters, Mary Rose and Georgette Medlin.

Gil joined the Columbus Police Department May 24th, 1976, fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a police officer. Over the course of his 44-year career, he would go on to become a member of the S.W.A.T. team, CPD Pistol Team, Commander of the Special Ops Unit, Graduate of the 240th session of the National FBI Academy, earn officer of the year in 1988, and hold various ranks until his retirement as Assistant Chief of Police in Sept 2020.

Holding a master’s degree in criminal justice, Gil began his educator career in 2004 at CVCC where he was a Criminal Law Enforcement Professor, helping prepare students for a life of public service. Some of Gil’s favorite things to do were golfing, fishing, riding his motorcycle and spending time with his closest friends and companions, friends that he built life-long bonds with that he considered more family than just friends.

There was nothing more important to Gil than his family, where he held the ranks of husband, dad, and pawpaw.  His wife, children, and grandchildren were his everything, and he would move mountains to make them happy.  From coaching baseball and softball at Northern Little League for more than 12 years, to cheerleading competitions, beauty pageants and football games, Gil lived for his family and worked tirelessly to show every one of them how much they were loved and cared for.
