Arthur James Miller, Jr., 84, of Columbus, GA died peacefully at his home Friday, April 12, 2019.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at Riverdale Cemetery 1000 Victory Dr. Columbus, GA 31901 with Pastor Mitch Huling officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Miller was born August 19, 1934 in Columbus, GA son of the late Arthur James Miller, Sr. and Verna Hunt Miller Teal. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1953. He briefly attended Auburn University before entering The United States Air Force in 1954 and served honorably until 1957. He attended the Air Traffic Control Academy in Oklahoma City, OK. from July 1958 through September 1958 where he received his Air Traffic Controller certificate. He then worked as an Air Traffic Controller at the Columbus GA. Municipal Airport from 1958 until 1969. He went on to jointly operate a family business from 1969 until 1985. In 1985, he returned to become an Air Traffic Controller at Lawson Army Airfield until his retirement in 1992.
He enjoyed Auburn football, fishing, and having numerous friends during his retirement while living on Lake Harding for 30 plus years.
Other than his parents, he was proceeded in death by numerous aunts and an uncle.
He is survived by his son, Roger Van Miller of Columbus, GA, grandchildren, Kaylyn Kathlene Miller of Atlanta, GA, and Pate Sawyer Miller of Columbus, GA, and an aunt, Johnnie McLemore, and cousins, John Gresham, Becky Bynum of Columbus GA, Teri Richards-Ogle of Niceville,FL, and Debby Phillips of Tallahassee, FL.
