Annie Sue Chambliss

Annie Sue Chambliss died peacefully on May 8, 2021 at her home in Covenant Woods in Columbus, GA. Born on November 18, 1925 she was the daughter of Floyd Idus Chambliss and Lucy Daniel Chambliss. Lucy’s sister, Mary Katherine Daniel, lived with the family. Sue had three brothers: Floyd Idus Chambliss, Jacque Merritt Chambliss, and Leon Marshall Chambliss. Her sisters were Mary Katherine Kovac, Leila Wilson, and Fay Johnson. Sue was the last survivor of her generation.

Sue graduated from high school at the age of 16 and after some electrical training spent her working life with the Army at Fort Benning. In every office she was assigned, she quickly learned everyone else’s job. If anyone was surplused, it would not be Sue! She worked in accounting, training, and office management.

All Sue’s interests were done with concentration and gusto whether it was horseback riding, quilting, or French cooking. She loved to travel and was always a voracious reader. She was an avid and well-educated bird watcher. This hobby took her all over North America including Canada, Alaska, and the Aleutians on bird watching expeditions seeing birds in their natural habitats. This frequently included long trips with small groups in wild places. Her birding log listed over 600 sightings, several quite rare.

Sue was an anchor for the family, always there in times of trouble and in good times. Her nieces and nephews were entertained with trips to Calloway Gardens, Gatlinburg, beaches, and jaunts to Atlanta for shopping and Theater Under the Stars. One memorable trip was to Wakulla Springs to view Halley’s Comet.

Sue was a lifelong member of St. Luke UMC and a regular contributor to local charities, particularly involving dogs.

As her activities slowed, she particularly valued the long-time friendship of Jennie Mac James, Debbie and Alan Hamilton, and nephew-in-law Ed Powell. Her many nieces and nephews, including Jacqueline Williams, Ann Greer, Mary Katherine Lappico, Lori Chambliss, Victor B. Kovac, Karen Kovac Steckel, Marsha Lee Leggiero, Floyd Wilson, Robert Wilson, Floyd Johnson and Kay Johnson. They remember her with pleasure and will miss her greatly.

A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date, according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907
