Allen Thomas Davis, Sr., 91, of Waverly Hall, GA died Saturday, November 3, 2012 at his home.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at Bethesda Baptist Church in Ellerslie, GA with Reverend David Helms officiating. A family graveside service will follow at Waverly Hall Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Monday, November 5, 2012 from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Davis was born October 2, 1921 in Slocumb, AL, son of the late Earnest and Laura Peel Davis. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was retired from the Fort Benning Fire Department after 25 years of service. After his retirement, he worked for the cities of Hamilton and Waverly Hall, GA. He also served as the Chief of the Waverly Hall Fire Department for many years.
Mr. Davis was ordained as a Deacon in 1954 at Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church. He also served as a Deacon at Morningside Baptist Church and Waverly Hall Baptist Church. He was currently a member and Deacon at Bethesda Baptist Church.
Mr. Davis was a loving and friendly man. No one liked a joke better than he. He liked to make people laugh, a trait he got from his mother. He only completed the third grade but wanted his children and grandchildren to take advantage of all the education they could receive. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruby Horne Davis, sister, Laura Davis and brothers, Lloyd Davis and Charles Ray Davis.
Survivors include his daughter, Delwanda Gallatin Thurmond of Waverly Hall, GA; sons, Earnest Davis (Helen), Tommy Davis (Betty) and Craig Davis (Jeanie) all of Columbus, GA; grandchildren, Dee Cruz (Jerry), Ernie Davis (Nikki), Jodi Loudermilk (Matt), Jamie Wilson (Wes), Brian Davis, Heath Davis (Brittany), Dewayne Gallatin (Kristin), Chris Gallatin (Jennifer), Sharwynne Rhein (John), Thomas Gallatin (Carol), Margaret Russell (Jimmy) and Clayton Davis (Gena); twenty-five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
