MSG (Ret.) Alfred John Gerstenschlager, 78, of Greer, SC died Thursday, August 5, 2010 at The Manning House.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2010 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Father Frank Patterson officiating. A private interment will be held in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service according to the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
MSG (Ret.) Gerstenschlager was born October 11, 1931 in Esther, MO son of the late John B. and Mary Pearl Bigelow Gerstenschlager. He retired after 21 years from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant. For 26 years he taught JROTC at Baker High School and Carver High School. He was also a bus driver for the Muscogee County School District for ten years. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus for many years.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida H. Gerstenschlager, daughter, Judith A. Cambria and five brothers.
Survivors include his son, Alfred J. Gerstenschlager (Holly) of Lyman, SC, grandchildren, Christopher J. and Bryan S. Gerstenschlager both of Lyman, SC, Danny R. Cambria (Lisa) of Phenix City, AL and Joseph A. Cambria of Columbus, GA, great grandchildren, Joshua T. and Daniel S. Cambria both of Phenix City, AL, and many nieces and nephews of Missouri and Nebraska.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Holy Family, Knights of Columbus, or American Red Cross.
