Albert Basler, 92, of Columbus, GA, died peacefully surrounded by his wife, Virginia, and loving friends.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 4, 2014 at St. Anne Catholic Church with Father Gerard Schreck officiating. Interment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. A Rosary will be said at 6:00 PM, Friday, January 3, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with visitation following until 8:00 PM.



Mr. Basler was born in 1921 in Patton, Missouri to Mary and Frank Basler. Mr. Basler was one of ten children. He was preceded in death by his parents, several siblings and his first wife, Bess. Today he is survived by his loving wife, Virginia of Columbus, GA, three sister; Genevieve Zerwig of Union City, Mo, Agnes Moser of Crystal City, MO, and Alice Ringwold of Ste. Genevieve, MO, and two brothers; Clarence Basler of Bridgeton, MO and Russell Basler of Bonne Terre, MO, and twenty-one nieces and nephews.



Mr. Basler had a distinguished military career; he served his country from 1944 to 1964. Mr. Basler served in Europe during WWII and was an infantry soldier at the Battle of the Bulge. He continued his military career into the Korean War. His numerous decorations and commendations include: Theatre Campaign Medals, Good Conduct Medals, Combat Infantry Badge, Combat Medical Badge and four Bronze Stars.



After retiring from the U.S. Army, Mr. Basler returned to serve his country for twenty more years as a medical repair technician at Martin Army Community Hospital retiring in 1964.



His service to others did not stop when he retired. Mr. Basler was a leader at St. Anne Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. Taking on another role of service for thirty years he was a member of the United States Power Squadron; he served as instructor and commander teaching the public safe boating techniques.

Mr. Basler was a servant for his Lord, his country, his family, and community.

Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to the Knights of Columbus Council 1019 or the St. Anne Outreach Program at 2000 Kay Circle, Columbus, GA.
