SFC (Ret.) U.S. Army Wilkie James Stewart, 84, of Columbus, GA died Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Gentiva Hospice.
Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 15, 2013 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Steve Croft officiating. A private interment will be held at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
SFC (Ret.) Stewart was born April 11, 1929 in Bakersville, NC son of the late Melvin and Lela Esther Pitman Stewart. He retired as an E-7 from the U.S. Army. While serving in the Army he received the National Defense Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal (5th award), Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He later was a service station owner. He was a member of the Masonic Order and the VFW Post.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ingeborg Esther Kuhnle Stewart.
Survivors include his sons, Michael Stewart (Jeanine) of LaGrange, GA and Robert Stewart (Penny) of Xenia, OH, brother, Carl Stewart of Spruce Pine, NC, sister, Joyce Stewart of Morganton, NC, grandsons, Thomas Stewart (Lee) of Valdosta, GA and Garrett Stewart (Morgan) of Xenia, OH, and great grandson, Lucas James Stewart of Xenia, OH.
