1SG (Ret.) Walter Louis Mitchell, 88, of Cataula, Georgia died Saturday, February 5, 2022 at his residence.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, GA. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Walter was born December 22, 1933 in Clarksville, Indiana, son of the late Louis Carl Mitchell and Ruth Cleo Pritchard. Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Mary Joyce Mitchell, his son Rocky Louis Mitchell, and his son Wayne Lee Mitchell.

He is survived by his children Mary Catherine Brown (Lance Gauntt) of Sharpsburg GA., Judy Brown (Chris) of Columbus, GA., Leslie Tatum of Suwanee, GA., Teresa Szabo (Michael) of Columbus, GA., daughter in law Catherine Shaffer Mitchell of Smith Station, AL., 12 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren.

Walter served in the United States Army, Infantry until his retirement in 1971. He served combat tours in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Walter retired after 20 plus years of service to his country as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer. His military awards include 3 Bronze Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge with Star, Air Medal, and Army Commendation Medal. He earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State. After retirement, he worked in Law Enforcement and for the Department of Defense at Fort Benning, GA for many years.

He loved reading books and enjoyed reading the Bible daily. He was always willing to share his favorite scriptures with anyone. Walter enjoyed raising and training Beagles for rabbit hunting. He enjoyed gardening and creating things with his hands.
