1SG Rt. Walter Thomas Chavers, 87, of Columbus, GA died Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the Columbus Hospice House.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 14, 2019 in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
Mr. Chavers was born October 6, 1931 in Mobile, AL, son of the late George Washington and Etta Tipton Chavers. He retired after 20 years in the U.S. Army serving in Korea and three terms in Vietnam where he spoke frequent Vietnamese. During his service, he received the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, NDSM w/OLC, CIB (2nd Award), ARCOM w/OLC, VCM w/60 Device, JSCM, VSM, ROKPUC, DUE, AOM, UNSM, KSM, 8 O/S Bars, BSM, GCMDL (6th Award). Following his military career, Mr. Chavers worked as an Insurance agent for multiple companies. He loved reading his bible, watching the Atlanta Braves and most importantly, he enjoyed being with his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Chloe "Chris" Chavers, children, Walter Thomas "Tom" Chavers, Jr. (Debe) of Marietta, GA, Bruce Chavers (Ute) of Columbus, GA and Robin Chavers O'Dell (Woody) of Hamilton, GA, brother, George W. Chavers of Corpus Christi, TX, sisters, Lucia Castaldi of Pennsylvania and Jeri Tuck of Quaker Town, PA, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
